Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Malawi’s Arts and Culture Sector (2024 -2025)
GEMACS is a 1-year project which is being implemented with a USD100,000 grant funding from the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD), a funding instrument established under the UNESCO 2005 Convention on Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. This project seeks to develop institutional and individual capacities for promoting gender equality in the culture and arts sector in Malawi. It is envisaged that through various activities, the project will enhance women's active participation in the sector.
Some of the activities under the project include
- Training workshops for women creatives on areas of business development, digital skills, gender equality and resource mobilization.
- Training of leaders of artist associations on gender mainstreaming.
- Review of constitutions governing artist associations to make provisions for gender equality in leadership roles.
- Promotion of works of women creatives through various digital platforms.
- Desk review of the National Cultural Policy to draw recommendations for promoting gender equality in the sector.
- Establishment of women desks in all 12 artist associations, and supporting them with ICT equipment.
